The 5 stages of the creative process

The 5 Stages of the Creative Process -->by James clear In 1940, an advertising executive named James Webb Young published a short guide titled, A Technique for Producing Ideas . In this guide, he made a simple, but profound statement about generating creative ideas. According to Young, innovative ideas happen when you develop new combinations of old elements. In other words, creative thinking is not about generating something new from a blank slate, but rather about taking what is already present and combining those bits and pieces in a way that has not been done previously. Most important, the ability to generate new combinations hinges upon your ability to see the relationships between concepts. If you can form a new link between two old ideas, you have done something creative. Young believed this process of creative connection always occurred in five steps. 1. Gather new material. At first, you learn. During this stage you focus on 1) learning specific material ...

USA Gymnastics board to resign

USA Gymnastics board to resign after sex abuse scandal The entire board of the US national governing body for gymnastics is to resign as demanded by the head of the US Olympic Committee. US authorities are opening broader investigations into sexual abuse in sports. Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman at the sentencing hearing for former doctor Larry Nassar US Olympic Committee (USOC) Chief Executive Officer Scott Blackmun had called on the board of USA Gymnastics (USAG) to resign by next Wednesday following the conviction of former national team doctor Larry Nassar after more than 140 women accused him of sexual abuse. In response to a question on the board's position on Friday, spokeswoman Leslie King wrote in an email: "USA Gymnastics will comply with the USOC requirements." Five USAG directors had resigned in the immediate aftermath of Nassar's conviction. USOC had threatened to remove USAG's authority to run the sport if the other 16 directors failed...

The limitations of music therapy

The Limitations of Music Therapy---->By James Clear  You can summarize the current state of research on the connection between music and health by saying that we know music impacts our brains and bodies, but we don't quite understand exactly why or how music does this. And because we don't understand the details, it can be hard to use music for healing. To be honest, part of these issues could be solved if researchers performed better studies. Right now, researchers aren't doing themselves any favors because musical research rarely follows a typical format. Here are a few common errors (and solutions). 1. Current research doesn't clearly differentiate if it is the act of playing music or the act of listening to music that benefits patients. For example, if a patient gets better after playing songs on a keyboard, chanting in different tones, or singing their favorite song, are they benefiting from the musical notes or from the act of playing music? F...

THE RESEARCH MUSIC AS MEDICINE

The Research: Music as Medicine First, music can be used to relieve pain in patients. For example, surgery patients at the Cleveland Clinic that listened to recorded music saw a 4x decrease in post-surgical pain. Music has also been shown to reduce the amount of anesthesia needed during operations. Second, music can be used to relieve stress and anxiety. Calming music decreases blood pressure, steadies the heart rate, and eases stress. Research has shown that music can reduce stress for patients undergoing surgeries and colonoscopies, for children undergoing medical procedures, and for patients with coronary heart disease. There is also preliminary evidence showing that listening to music can boost immune system function by decreasing stress hormones and increasing growth hormones. These changes should prime the body to be in a better state for recovering from and resisting illnesses, but the research is weak thus far and needs further investigation. Finally, there are a rang...

Failure is an event,Not an identity

Failure is an Event, Not an Identity Joshua Waitzkin, a martial arts competitor and champion chess player, says, “At a high level of competition, success often hinges on who determines the field and tone of battle.” It is your mental toughness—your Sisu —that determines the tone of battle. Most people let their battles define them. They see failure as an indication of who they are. Mentally tough people let their perseverance define them. They see failure as an event. Failure is something that happens to a person, not who a person is. This attitude is what helped carry the Finnish soldiers through the Winter War. Even when surrounded by failure, by death, and by insurmountable odds, their Sisu did not let the soldiers see themselves as failures. We will all face moments when our physical and mental resources feel tapped out. There will always be times when we are hammered with failure after failure and are called to find a fire within. And perhaps even more frequently, ...
