USA Gymnastics board to resign after sex abuse scandal The entire board of the US national governing body for gymnastics is to resign as demanded by the head of the US Olympic Committee. US authorities are opening broader investigations into sexual abuse in sports. Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman at the sentencing hearing for former doctor Larry Nassar US Olympic Committee (USOC) Chief Executive Officer Scott Blackmun had called on the board of USA Gymnastics (USAG) to resign by next Wednesday following the conviction of former national team doctor Larry Nassar after more than 140 women accused him of sexual abuse. In response to a question on the board's position on Friday, spokeswoman Leslie King wrote in an email: "USA Gymnastics will comply with the USOC requirements." The Research: Music as Medicine First, music can be used to relieve pain in patients. For example, surgery patients at the Cleveland Clinic that listened to recorded music saw a 4x decrease in post-surgical pain. Music has also been shown to reduce the amount of anesthesia needed during operations. Second, music can be used to relieve stress and anxiety. Calming music decreases blood pressure, steadies the heart rate, and eases stress. Research has shown that music can reduce stress for patients undergoing surgeries and colonoscopies, for children undergoing medical procedures, and for patients with coronary heart disease. There is also preliminary evidence showing that listening to music can boost immune system function by decreasing stress hormones and increasing growth hormones. These changes should prime the body to be in a better state for recovering from and resisting illnesses, but the research is weak thus far and needs further investigation. Pay Your School Fees Before Jan 12 Or Forfeit Your Admission  The management of Olabisi Onabanjo University has warned fresh students of the institution to pay up their tuition fees on or before 12th January 2018 or face risk of forfeiting their admission.  This directive was contained in a memo released by the University Registrar. The memo reads:  "This is to inform all fresh students that the deadline for payment of fees for 2017/2018 session is on 12th January,  2018.Any fresh student who fails to meet the payment deadline  should consider his/her admission forfeited, PLEASE NOTE THIS INFORMATION AS THE UNIVERSITY WILL NOT ENTERTAIN PLEA FOR EXTENSION.  The Olabisi Onabanjo University has postponed its matriculation ceremony slated to hold next week Wednesday, 10th January 2018.It was gathered from official sources that the postponement is as a result of the university's admission list which is yet to be completely released.   Recall that the university released a 6th batch admission list on Thursday, 4th January 2018. The Officials said it is to informed us that the admission list has not been completely released and there are more names to be collated and released in coming weeks, a reason why the matriculation ceremony cannot hold yet.  As at time of filing this report, it is unclear what new date will be fixed for the matriculation exercise.  Meanwhile, the university is set to finally close the portal for payment of tuition fees on 12th January, 2018. This directive applies with both fresh and returning students.

ABAKALIKI— A 17-year-old teenage girl was allegedly drugged by traffickers, labbelled mentally ill and her three-month-old boy sold for N910,000. Meanwhile, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, in collaboration with the Police, has arrested membbers of the child-trafficking syndicate in connection with the stealing and sale of the baby in Ebonyi State. NAPTIP Desk Officer in Ebonyi State, Mrs Florence Onwa, explained that the baby boy, Agbanwe Omogo, and his 17-year-old mother were lured by a family friend, Mrs Chinonye Agu, from their community, Abogodo, in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, to Onitsha in Anambra State. She noted that the suspected trafficker drugged the teenage mother and took her baby away. Lagos— A technician, Ozoemena Osigwe, has allegedly stabbed an unemployed man on the buttocks for refusing to buy him a bottle of beer. He was, yesterday, arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos. Osigwe, 37, who resides at Marwa Ghetto, is facing a count charge of unlawful assault and occasioning harm. The prosecutor, Inspector Ingobo Emby, told the court that the complainant, Samuel Emmanuel, was drinking at a bar when Osigwe approached and taunted him that he was drunk. He said the incident occurred at about 2p.m. on New Year’s day in a bar at Marwa Ghetto, Lekki. Emby said Osigwe allegedly asked Emmanuel to buy him a bottle of beer, but the complainant refused. A fight then broke out, following an exchange of insults. According to the prosecutor, “the complainant broke a bottle and threatened the defendant with it. “Osigwe fled to his house nearby and allegedly returned with a kitchen knife with which he stabbed the complainant in the buttocks.” According to Emby...
